I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Joe McGinniss last night. I have been a fan of Joe’s work since I read Fatal Vision soon after it was published. Even though I was a callow undergraduate at the time, I sensed that this was the real thing, a work of immense narrative sweep and relentless integrity. Since then, I have followed Joe as he took on subjects ranging from Ted Kennedy to Italian soccer to Sarah Palin.
Even better, I was lucky enough to be Joe’s friend for the past several years. He was as charming, gracious and entertaining a man as I have ever met, a true friend who once managed to get one of my books shouted out by the commentator during the live broadcast of a Barcelona soccer match.
He will be sorely missed, but he will also be joyously remembered.
